After some powerful lessons at the hands of two great men, fifth graders graduated D.A.R.E. After the passing of Officer Collins in the middle of the program it was a concern as to whether the students would be able to finish what Officer Collins had started. We were fortunate enough to have Officer Duhnovsky of the Culver Police Department step into the teaching role and finish out the remainder of the program. The students had to complete a essay about what D.A.R.E. means to them, and one winner was chosen from each class. With a very powerful essay, Shelby from my class won! Congratulations Shelby!

What do you do with empty containers and boxes? Most of the time you throw them away, right? I asked students to collect these items from home for a project, but I didn't tell them what they would be doing. I gave them the challenge of turning these unwanted and often disposable items into a game that students could play. Their creative minds went to work right away. You can see from these pictures that students enjoyed themselves and the games that were created. We have been working on memorizing the 50 states and their capitals. As part of our exploration, we wrote all of the fifty states about our challenge. We tried to collect a postcard from each and every state by April 1. We were successful in receiving 39 states' postcards and information. We even received packages of goodies from some states. Hawaii sent us a poster! Kentucky sent us Bluegrass seeds, pins, stickers, and a plush horse the student who wrote them. What an awesome treat. We were very pleased with the outcome, even if we didn't receive every state's postcard. |
