Should we celebrate Columbus Day?
We have spent the last week studying early European explorers and their influence on the world. We spent a couple of days learning about Christopher Columbus and the credit he gets for discovering the "Americas" when he really only discovered the West Indies. We learned about and discussed his treatment of the native people he encountered. Students were appalled to learn that he used violence and even enslaved them. Here's a great resource to read more if you are unfamiliar with Columbus' story.
http://www.history.com/topics/exploration/columbus-controversy Students requested that we take a poll to see how people feel about celebrating Columbus Day (Monday) in light of knowing Columbus' true background. Share with us what you think. Feel free to comment on the post as well as take the poll! To replace our old "Homework Hotline" which no longer exists, I have set up a group for nightly homework alerts through Remind. If you are interested in receiving nightly reminders about homework via text or email, follow the directions below. |
